ctrlX OS – Container Engine

Container technology is very popular in computer science and software development. In this context, containers are standardized software units that bundle the program code and all its dependencies, so that the desired application can be run quickly and reliably in another computer environment – even under different operating systems (Linux, Windows, macOS).

Since its debut in 2013, Docker Inc. has accelerated the development and widespread adoption of this technology with its popular open-source container runtime, Docker Engine. To run containers with Docker Engine, an image is needed that contains everything necessary to operate an application: the program code, the runtime environment, tools, libraries, and settings. This allows them to be easily transported and installed as files. Docker Hub is the world's largest repository for such container images. Docker Inc. also offers Docker Desktop, which helps developers create, run, and share containerized applications for local development. With Docker Desktop, images of software applications can be created, and containers can be run and managed, among many other things.

The Container Engine App enables Docker images to run in an isolated and autonomous manner as containers on the ctrlX CORE. It represents the interface between the resources of the ctrlX CORE and the running containers. Using a Snap template, a Docker image application for the ctrlX CORE can be created from a Docker image and the associated Docker configuration files. These apps are visible in the App Manager like native ctrlX CORE apps.

Please note the following warranty limitations and IT security aspects:

The ctrlX CORE Container Engine App itself fully complies with Bosch Rexroth quality standards and the security mechanisms of the ctrlX CORE. However, as Docker technology brings with it some inherent security aspects, Bosch Rexroth cannot assume responsibility for Docker images not provided by Bosch Rexroth (so-called custom Docker images) and run on the Container Engine.

Users who provide and deploy custom Docker images on the ctrlX CORE must note and confirm that:

• Bosch Rexroth assumes no warranty for custom Docker images running on a ctrlX CORE.
• The provider of a custom Docker image on the ctrlX CORE must ensure that this image does not violate the integrated security mechanisms of the ctrlX CORE. The ctrlX OS App Developer Guideline and the associated guidelines in the SDK contain information on how these mechanisms can be fully supported.
• If the custom Docker image does not comply with the guidelines, any access by the image to system resources of the ctrlX CORE can lead to security and availability issues in the ctrlX CORE. The provider must monitor and secure (harden) the image accordingly to avoid impacts on the ctrlX CORE system.
